Summary

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2launched in advanced access last week for those who pre-ordered the game, and wasimmediately review bombedafter players discovered that it quietly installs Epic Games' online service for crossplay purposes. In mere hours, it dropped to ‘Mixed’ on Steam with over 1,000 negative reviews logged.

This isn’t a Ubisoft Connect or Origin scenario — you aren’t downloading Epic Games Store or a second launcher, just an online tool.

Thankfully, that ‘Mixed’ score was short-lived, as the reactionary outrage was immediately met with positive reviews, bringing the long-awaited Space Marine 2 up to ‘Very Positive’ just in time for its launch today.

The Vast Majority Of Space Marine 2 Players Don’t Care About The Epic Online Service

As of writing, 80 percent of the over 30,000 reviews are positive, likening the experience to classicGears of War, labelling it one of the best lookingWarhammergames of all-time, and singing its campaign’s praises.

Another common thread throughout many of the positive reviews is that Space Marine 2 isa great jumping on point for newcomers, with many writing that this is their first taste of Warhammer’s grimdark sci-fi universe and that they are having ablastcutting up Tyranids with a chainsword for the Greater Good.

The bad actors seem to have quietened, making this review bomb one big catastrophic fail. ‘Very Positive’ is the second-highest Steam score, just behind ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’, a far cry from the ‘Mixed’ we saw in the opening days of advanced access. Although, interspersed with the positive reviews, you’ll still find many outraged at the mere idea of Epic being anywhere near Steam.

The game launches properly in just six hours, so it’ll be interesting to see whether a new influx of players has any impact on that score, but for now, the review bomb itself has bombed.
