The grimdark universe ofWarhammer 40,000is full of warriors, both human and otherwise. It’s a huge cast of characters that can be hard to keep up with, but what else do you expect from a universe that spans shows, books, video games, and tabletop adventures?

Just one of the named characters in Warhammer 40k is that of Marneus Calgar, and he himself has appeared not only inthe books of lore, but also the tabletop settings, a graphic novel, and a video game as well. But who is this stalwart figure in the blue armor?

Who Is Marneus Calgar?

Marneus Calgar isa member of the Ultramarines chapter of space marines. Their goal is to be an elite fighting force of the Imperium Of Man, fighting off the alien and chaos forces that beset them on all sides.

Space marines themselves aregenetically engineered humans who are created for war and war alone.Calgar is a rathernotable figure in the Ultramarines, something that has earned him many tales and plenty of honor.

What Is His Rank?

Calgar holds the rank of Chapter Master of the Ultramarines, as well as Lord of Macragge(which is the homeworld of the Ultramarines chapter). This makes him the leader of any and all Ultramarines that exist in the galaxy.

In the 42nd Millenium, the Ultramarines' primarch (genetic father, leader, and demigod of sorts), Roboute Guilliman, has returned. But, Calgar maintains the rank of Chapter Master, deferring only to Guilliman in how to maneuver the chapter.

What Does He Do?

Calgar bothmaintains the sanctity of Ultramar, which is the area of planets that the Ultramarines society stems from, and alsohelps the Imperium by fielding the Ultramarines across the galaxyagainst any enemy they deem needs their help.

This meanshis field of purview is galactic in size. But, with so much to do, he usually leads from the frontlines in engagements where he and his best units are needed. He is often seengiving orders to those across long-range communication and fighting enemies firsthand at the same time.

What Weapons Does He Use?

All space marines have an impressive arsenal they can call upon, but as Chapter Master there are few space marines that has as impressive of equipment as Calgar does.

He is often seen in eithera set of terminator armoror, after crossing the rubicon,a set of highly personalized power armor in the livery of the Ultramarines.Throughout his journey, he has implemented various weapons.

In the past, he hasridden in a personal armored personnel carrier that doubles as a mobile HQ, and wielded a relic power sword.

In most appearances, though, he is seen wieldinga pair of ornate power fists called the Gauntlets Of Ultramar. They not only have incredible strength of their own, but also have underslung bolters that fire incredibly fast. Usually, he employs these separately, multitasking by taking out a different target with each bolter or fist.

He is also usually seen withan iron halo, a personal force field against ranged attacks and often the powers of the warp.

What Is He Known For?

Calgar has a long list of accolades, but that should be expected from someone of his rank and age. Perhapsmost notably he led the defense of Ultramar during the tyranid invasion, successfully repelling them.

His personal combat records are impressive as well, including defending against a siege of an ork army by himself, destroying an ork gargant, killing several large tyranid bioforms, and on multiple occasions foiling chaos plots that included defeating chaos space marines and actual daemons.

The Events Of Space Marine 2

During Titus' journey on Kadaku and surrounding planets,Calgar was summoned with his own Ultramarines force to back up the initial army. This shows how important the chaos force showing their hand was to the loyalist forces.

Calgar jumped into a warp portal concocted by the Thousand Sons sorcerer. Here Calgar, Titus, and his squad defeated waves of chaos forces andwon the battle against the Thousand Sons.

The aura that surrounded Calgar is debated to either be his own faith or a type of aura projected by hit own iron halo.

Afterwords,Calgar left on his own ship with Titus in tow, presumably to fight other threats facing the Imperium, maybe even beside Guilliman himself.
