After a few sequels with different characters and powers, Maxine Caulfield is back in the protagonist’s seat inLife Is Strange: Double Exposure. While the game itself is a new story for Max in a different place, with different people and even different powers, it acknowledges the events of the original Life Is Strange.

These acknowledgments come in the form of backstory information for Max and don’t affect the new narrative in any big way. Still, because both this game and the original had player choices, it begs the question of what is canon and what isn’t, especially regarding Chloe Price, as the original game was all about saving her. So, what happened to her?

For now, only the first two episodes are out. If more information on Chloe gets revealed once the entire game is out, we’ll update this article accordingly.

What Happened To Chloe?

What happened to Chloe ispartially up to you.Because Double Exposure doesn’t know how you interpreted their relationship or how you endedthe original title, you’ll have a conversation with another character, Safi, where you both talk about the blue-haired girl whose picture you keep in your wallet.

During this conversation, you’ll make two choices about Chloe. The choices you pick willbecome the canonical conclusion of their storytogether during your playthrough.

First, you’ll choosewhether Max and Chloe were friends or high school sweethearts, giving them a more romantic context. Then, you’ll choosewhether they grew apart (or broke up, if you went with sweethearts) or if Chloe died.

In other words, Max and Chloe willeither have gone their separate ways before the events of Double Exposure, orChloe will have died at the end of the original game.

Max And Chloe Growing Apart

If you choose thatMax and Chloe used to be friends and that Chloe survived the first game, Max will say thatthey became road trip friends for a while, but they grew apartbecause the way they process things is just different, which eventually caused a falling apart.

Admittedly, the answer Max gives is quite vague, so there’s not much else to say about picking these choices together. You can assume it’s for the same reasons as the break-up, or maybe because Chloe had romantic feelings for Max that weren’t reciprocated or just something else entirely - it’sopen to interpretation.

Max And Chloe Breaking Up

If you choose thatMax and Chloe were sweetheartsand that Chloe survived the first game,Max will talk about how they dated for a while but that their break-up happened because Max was stuck in the past while Chloe was thinking about the future.

However, interacting with Max’s stuff reveals more information.Chloe shows signs of insecurity over Max’s power, afraid thatMax could potentially revert time over and overuntil she got what she wanted out of the relationship - though we have no reason to believe Max actually did that at any point.

You can also see old messages between them, some of which tackle the power situation we just mentioned. They also showed a bit of their day-to-day lives as a couple. Lastly, you can find a break-up letter from Chloe to Maxand some things Max kept from Arcadia Bay.

This scenario also shows some of Max’s trauma from the events of the original game andthe guilt of not saving Arcadia Bay, though only for a moment.

Chloe Dies

Lastly, this is the outcome you get by telling Safi that the blue-haired girl died, regardless of if she was a friend or high school sweetheart. Things are a bit more straightforward here, asMax just tells Safi about losing her friend or sweetheartbefore moving on.

Later, in Max’s room, you’ll get to see a photo of Chloe, andMax begins to reminisce about some of their interactions in the original Life Is Strange.

This decision also meanseveryone from Arcadia Bay is well. You get messages from some of them on your phone, such as Max’s parents and Chloe’s mom, developing this scenario a bit further.

What Should You Pick?

Ultimately, you should go with whatever choice you ended the first game with or whichever option feels like the right one for you, of course. That said, we’d like to offer you a suggestion based on the game’s narrative andwhich choice feels more organic for Max in the Double Exposure events.

From a narrative standpoint,we recommend you pick the ‘sweethearts’ and ‘she is dead’ options.Double Exposure isn’t worried about using Chloe, as it has its own story going on, so giving a proper closure to the original game’s events fits better here.

The break-up, while not being a bad idea necessarily, doesn’t feel properly implemented, and just gives things an awkward conclusion- somethingmany fans agree with.

Despite Max mentioning some guilt over Arcadia Bay,she also seems pretty okay about it after this mention. It’s weird to see her being at peace with everyone who died because she chose a woman who dumped her later on.

Meanwhile,a backstory where Chloe died still gives proper weight to how Max behaves, as she’s still moving on from such a loss, but she also doesn’t have to deal with throwing an entire town under the bus.

Still, these events don’t play a big role in Double Exposureand mostly serve as Max’s backstory.
