Dragon BallDaima isthe last series the late Toriyama worked on, and he was deeply involved in its development. The story takes our heroes back to their adventuring roots, with Goku not only looking like his old child self, but also using his Power Pole as his main weapon.
What everyone was wondering before Daima started, was where it would fit in the timeline. After all, Toriyama was also involved in Dragon Ball Super, so it would be natural to expect Daima to happen after the Super saga. Yet once the first episode aired, we saw that we weren’t as far in the timeline as we thought.
The Dragon Ball Timeline
A critical point in the Dragon Ball timeline is the end of Z, specificallythe end of the Buu saga. OnceGoku finishes off Kid Buuwith the Spirit Bomb,he hopes that he reincarnatesinto someone good, andthe story skips forward a few years.
After that time skip,Goku participates in the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament, wherehe meets Uub(the reincarnation of Buu), and decides to train him.
Sinceeverything that happens in Z tends to be viewed as absolute canon, the series that followed Z are placed eitherbefore or after Goku meets Uub.
Placing Dragon Ball GT And Dragon Ball Super
Dragon Ball GT is the only series that happens after Goku meets Uub, the events unfolding a few years after.
Dragon Ball Super, on the other hand, happens before, with its events stretching more and more towards the fateful encounter between the Saiyan and the reborn Majin.
Even though you’re able to place both shows in the timeline, the power levels handled by Super make itimpossible for GT to happen right after.Gohan, for example, just acquired his Beast form, but in GT he’s back to only using his basic Super Saiyan form.
Where Does Daima Fit In The Timeline?
Daima happensjust a few months after the defeat of Buu, placing it far before Goku’s meeting with Uub, as well as before the events of Dragon Ball Super.
A new villain, named Gomah,uses the Earth’s Dragon Ballsto turn everyone that fought Buu into children, out of fear of them invading his hellish realm.
Daima seems to wish toexpand the Dragon Ball lorewithout pushing the limits of power levels further. As the story stands,Super Saiyan 3 is the biggest achievement of our heroes, although their small bodies might not let them reach anything close to that power.
Is Daima Canon?
It’s hard to say if Daima is considered canon or a variation of the canon. From what’s been seen so far,it can’t be canon with Super.This is due to a few revealed details regardingthe Potara earrings and Shin.
Shin, the East Supreme Kai,fused with his assistant Kibitoby using the Potara earrings andformed Kibito Kai.In Dragon Ball Super, Shin and Kibito return to their older selvesthanks to the Namekian Dragon Balls, but in Daima, they haveMajin Buu consume themso they can split just like Vegito did before.
We don’t know if this detail isconfirmation that Daima and Super can’t happenin the same timeline, or if it wasa missed detail by the creators of the anime.Either way, if you consider Super to be the canonical continuation of the Dragon Ball story, thenDaima isn’t canon.
