Summary

Set within a lovingly recreated version of Shibuya wrapped up in a game of many varying inspirations,Reynatisis a game that will appeal to a very specific demographic, and that is primarily people that really love Shibuya. It’s characters, too, are built deeply into the contemporary culture of Japan.

What will appeal universally, however, is its combat. Reynatis gives you six characters to play as during combat, with three of them active at any point. While only one can be out on the field at any given time, you can make any party combination you want. That said, certain characters fit the game’s overall style a lot better than others.

6Dogo

Dogo is the token older character of the story, a man who is all muscles and no mind. He’s primarily comic reliefand not much else. In contrast to the rest of the younger cast, it doesn’t rely on magical abilities quite so much, letting his fists do the talking instead. This could have been fun, but it simply isn’t.

While it can be fun at first to realise Dogo doesn’t dash around the area like others, his attacks are very slow and not much stronger than everyone else who attacks considerably faster. Your damage scales off your combo meter as well, and it drains much too quickly to maintain it with Dogo or even build it up in the first place.

5Nika

When you first acquire Nika, she plays sufficiently differently from Marin. Rather than being incredibly fast and up-close, her attacks hit in a wider range while many of her abilities linger on the battlefield to keep attacking enemies regardless of Nika’s own actions.

She’s a pretty significant improvement over Dogo, though she doesn’t quite matchup with others since she still has a relatively low damage output and relying on the random attack patterns of her abilities can be a bit hit-or-miss. When she works, she can be great, though she rarely works when you want her to.

reynatis moa in miyashita rooftop park.

4Moa

The third character playable as part of Marin’s party, Moa fulfills the same role as Dogo does to Sari’s party. She is a slow but hard-hitter, and can tear through enemy armour with ease. She, however, actually hits harder than Dogo and can still dash around much more quickly.

While the majority of her attacks can’t be animation canceled, it’s her abilities that you should primarily using. Those pull off much faster and can actually deal significant damage and knockback. Most of them can be charged as well to make them even more powerful or longer lasting.

reynatis sari in miyashita rooftop park.

3Sari

Sari is marketed as the deuteragonist of Reynatis, though her story concludes quite early on in favour of Marin’s pursuit of endless strength. Like Marin, she plays the role of the fast attacker, skipping around with ease and laying into enemies to build up high combos.

Sari has some flashy animations and most of her abilities pull off quite quickly, meaning she has very minimal downtime. Her regular attack string pulls her into the air automatically which can make keeping locked onto an enemy quite difficult, though the rest of her abilities having decidedly stronger tracking, making her an actual strong choice in battle.

reynatis ukai in miyashita rooftop park.

2Ukai

Ukai is the sharpshooter of Sari’s squad, fulfilling the same role as Nika from Marin’s squad. So what causes him to rank so much more highly than Nika? The simplest part of it is that Ukai is fully dedicated tohis role as a ranged fighter, with his whole moveset letting him function at a distance from enemies.

With his dual pistols, Ukai fires off a torrent of bullets with every button press. While these deal relatively minimal damage, each bullet counts as a hit. This means Ukai can build up hilarously high combos in a very short period of time. Combined with his ability, Anole Barrage, these bullets at high combos can actually deal pretty devastating damage.

reynatis marin in miyashita rooftop park.

1Marin

Despite being advertised as the deuteragonist alongside Sari, Marin is the real star of the show. In reality, it feels like the entirety of the game was built around him, with every other character being built afterwards and adjusted to fit into an already defined system. So of course Marin is the best character to play as.

He hits fast, deals decently high damage, and can cancel all of his animations with ease. He doesn’t suffer from the over-the-top movement of Sari’s attack string, letting him control his placement much better. Oh, he also just has way more abilities than every other character as well, meaning he actually has much more combat customisation than every other character, too.
