Summary

Despite having been released in March,WWE 2K24, the latest release in the annualized wrestling simulation franchise, is still chugging along. Whereas previous titles were a one-and-done release with no updates, the 2K iteration of WWE games has taken on a more live-service-based approach, with weekly updates, along with a yearly Season Pass.

Those updates have added a slew of new wrestlers to the game, including the long-awaited return of CM Punk, as well asa riff on the blocky polygonal wrestlers that once graced the PS2 era. Now, via a new update, 2K is adding “gimmick swapped” superstars, or wrestlers taking the identity of another character.

Stone Cold Kevin Owens Is Coming

As first revealed by a WWE 2K content creator on Twitter, Patch 1.23 added several new gimmick-swapped superstars into the game’s files. Those wrestlers include the following:

Stylistically speaking, the characters aren’t particularly unique, though they do raise some interesting questions. For one, DX has not been part of a WWE game as a core roster addition in some time, despite there seemingly being no contractual rights issues. Ripley wearing DX-themed gear is certainly a choice.

More so, it brings up another point, specifically the sheer number of Persona cards in the game. These cards are exclusive to the MyFaction mode and are not part of the game’s annual pass. They often require large amounts of grinding,or real-life actions, like purchasing an actual 20-plus dollar action figure to earn a specific card.

To this point, 2K has not made the collection of Persona cards available for a one-time purchase, though that could change before the game’s support ends. Still, while it’s an interesting addition, it does make things all the more confusing.
